 Green Tipping

Overview:  Green Tipping - Scaling Up Green Choice From Niche to Norm is an ERC Consolidator grant project spearheaded by an international interdisciplinary team at the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna. This project aims to identify cost-effective and scalable interventions that can recognize social tipping points, overcome inertia, and catalyze a shift towards climate-friendly behaviors.

Objectives and Modules: The project is structured around four key objectives, each represented by a dedicated module:

  1. Posit: This module focuses on identifying the preconditions necessary for achieving green tipping. It involves analyzing adoption thresholds and assessing the potential for normative change within societies.
  2. Test: The second module evaluates the performance of Social Tipping Interventions (STIs) at scale. This includes measuring increased climate contributions and gathering policy support to understand the effectiveness of various strategies.
  3. Refine: In this module, researchers will calibrate models and enhance STIs by identifying susceptible targets. The goal is to maximize the efficacy of interventions by understanding which demographics or groups are most likely to respond positively.
  4. Validate: The final module assesses the tipping potential in real-world settings. This involves investigating the role of STIs in instigating change among both treated and untreated groups, providing valuable insights into how to implement successful interventions.

Methodology: GREEN TIPPING employs a robust methodology that combines surveys, laboratory experiments, and field studies to gather comprehensive data on social behaviors and intervention impacts. The project's interdisciplinary approach allows for a thorough examination of the dynamics at play in fostering sustainable choices.

Outcome: By leveraging insights from economics, sociology, and environmental studies, GREEN TIPPING aims to pave the way for effective strategies that can lead to meaningful and sustainable behavioral change in the fight against climate change.
